films a go go

Phew – I’ve been to see a few films lately. Actually, I’ve seen 3 in a week. To be honest, I’d pretty much given up on films this year after a few pretty poor efforts, but this last week has been something of a redemption for big budget films, and a decent indie:

Spiderman 2 was worth going to see. I’m not sure whether it was so much better than the first one, but it really was a pretty good hero flick. I am biased here – I like director Raimi’s stuff generally, and I like a lot of the stuff Alf Molina has been in too. It’s a well paced outing for Spidey, and a good weekend popcorn bevvy.

Deep Blue isn’t about chess by the way, it’s a 90 minute look at life under the sea, on the sea, and near the sea. It’d not really a documentary, as a collection of stunning images from our oceans and some amazing orchestral pieces from the Berlin Philharmonic. Definitely worth going to.

Shrek 2 proved to be even funnier than the original, even if a bit slower in places. Again it manages to balance slapstick that children will like with references and injokes that will keep adults amused. The finale really is excellent. Of course, making fun of disney is always a good thing in my book.
