There’s something just very relaxing about coastlines and sunrises or sunsets, even as Winter moves in. After almost 5 years of living near the Japan’s Shonan Pacific coast, I just don’t seem to get bored of cycling down here, walking around and taking some pictures (yes, almost the same picture) again and again. I’m not alone either, year round people are cycling the beach track, surfing a little, even playing beach volleyball, and I just don’t think it gets any more relaxed than this.

Unlike the Summers which are busy with tourists, the Winter tends to just be local people and those dedicated outdoors people looking to get some time in on the waves for surfing, wind-surfing or other outdoors activities, even if that’s just walking off breakfast lunch or dinner at one of the local places to eat. Good times.

Every now and then I’m around the Shonan area of Kanagawa, so in the Summer we may go to the beach, which is what the area is really famous for. After a day hanging around, getting into the ocean and walking around the beach you can also try oput some of the very relaxed cafes, bars and restaurants.

You can also get some really nice sunset shots if that’s your thing, and photos of all those people as they venture home.

Of course, if you’re in the water, take a waterproof camera (in my case an old GoPro HD Hero2). On this day in July, it wasn’t so busy, as the beach hut bars are often fairly crowded, so if you wanted to, you could get a beer and sit down for a bit.

New Header Photo: Feet In the Ocean

After five months with the excellent Alabaster Heads as my header image, I’ve decided to change it. I have to say though, that my photo of Jaume Plensa’s installation at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park got more hits and searches than any other header by a long way. If you haven’t seen them in real life, then seek them out.

The new header image is far less artistic or ambitious - it’s my feet in the clear waters of the Pacific Ocean at Shimoda on a recent visit to Ernest House. I’m wearing my Keen hiking sandals, and it was toward the end of a couple of great days, and it was nice to just stand in the water and watch the waves. I thought it made a nice ’end of summer’ image, as we go into Autumn 2011.
