After another long gap - four years this time - I did a new ’ One Second a Day’ video for October, in and around Tokyo.

What’s different this time? Well, this one was done on my DJI Osmo Action 4 which I’ll be doing a quick review of soon I hope, so it’s all 4K, wide view. I think the last one was mainly from my old GoPro 7 Black.

Also new this time is I uploaded a # shorts version, which already has more hits. I see why people like shorts. Anyway, here’s the regular version:

https://www.youtube.com/embed/VwjiQ2fldao

One Second a Day 2023 - In and Around Tokyo.

Amazing. No ’ one second a day’ posts for five years, and then two in three months? It’s true! The reason these two are so close together though is because I was a bit disappointed with the July one for variety and style. I should also say that this new one may not be better, but I do think it added variety.

The other main change is that instead of using my smartphone (an old Moto G5+) at 1080p 30fps, I used a GoPro 7 black, shooting 4K60 at its wide setting. It’s not a direct comparison, but it does show what a difference a choice of camera can make.

One Second a Day - September 2019 from Nanikore on YouTube.

It’s been exactly five years since I last did a ‘one second a day’ challenge, which I first saw on Vimeo, so I thought it was high time I did another. First off, it’s actually somewhere between fun and interesting, especially if like me you pretty much commute the same route during the week, to find something different every day.

A mistake I made (again) is that it often works better to have something consistant between shots, be it panning direction, colour, light etc. I’ll give it a go in September perhaps.

Another quick 1 second a day video. More of Tokyo and the suburbs, and a couple of days in Okinawa. I think I got a little more variety, but there’s still some similar shots which means I need to plan a little more! It’s surprising how addictive and helpful these short shot collages are.

One of the key things I need to do is add some commonality or flow to the the video, such as better colour links between data, or a consistent pan to make it less jarring.

By Nanikore on Vimeo. This one isn’t on YouTube yet, but I’ll update the link whenever I get around to sorting that out.

It’s been almost a year since I last did a ‘1 Second a Day’ was last April. It’s just a small project thing I saw on Vimeo - no soundtrack or real planning, just simple 1 second a day from the phone.

In what is becoming something of a tradition here now, I’m posting something I did almost 3 months ago - simply filming a second or so of video a day, and putting it together in chronological order, which is something that I’ve seen a lot of people do, and I actually kind of enjoyed doing it myself. Maybe I’ll do it again for August since I’ll be on holiday during it.

The idea for this came from an exercise mentioned on the Vimeo video website. Vimeo is a lot more for those who want to create videos and whilst it has an overlap with YouTube, you can see quite quickly that it’s a very different type of video site, perhaps more for video and film enthusiasts, and their school section often has some interesting ideas.

F rom Nanikore on Vimeo.
